Proficiency Testing Schemes
Proficiency testing (PT) is a valuable tool for evaluating the performance of testing laboratories. In general, PT plays a dual role as teacher and policeman for assisting participating laboratories in demonstrating their technical competence and identifying problems and opportunities for self-improvement. In fact, participation in PT schemes is one of the mandatory requirements for laboratory accreditation. Since 1987, the Government Laboratory (GL) has organised PT schemes in the areas of food, environment, commodity products, pharmaceuticals and Chinese medicine testing.
To manifest the GL’s commitments of being the reference laboratory for chemical measurements in Hong Kong and in collaboration with the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, the GL will continue to organise PT schemes as needed for providing support to the testing and certification industry.

The GL has been accredited as a proficiency testing provider in accordance with the international standard ISO/IEC 17043:2010. A summary of the PT schemes previously organised by the GL are shown below.
